Physiotherapy Services in Aberaeron
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Aberaeron premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Aberaeron is a planned Georgian harbour town on Cardigan Bay, laid out in the early nineteenth century after the Reverend Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne obtained an Act to build the harbour. Its terraces are painted in bright colours, and the neat grid of streets around Alban Square still reflects that original plan.
Many of the houses near the harbour are tall, narrow and have steep internal stairs, often with a step down from the pavement. When we visit after a fall or an operation, we spend time on those stairs, on front doorsteps and on getting in and out of low cottage armchairs safely.
The quayside is mostly level, with benches looking over the boats, so it makes a sensible first outdoor walk. The path following the Afon Aeron inland towards the National Trust estate at Llanerchaeron is longer and uneven in places, and it suits the later weeks of a recovery plan.
Aberaeron falls within Hywel Dda University Health Board. Surgery and emergency care for people here are usually provided at Bronglais in Aberystwyth or at Glangwili in Carmarthen, and private home rehabilitation can continue after someone has been discharged home.
The summer seafood festival and the honey ice cream sold on the harbour bring visitors in, and plenty of residents set themselves the goal of walking down to the quay for an event again. We use goals like that to shape the exercises, because they matter more than numbers on a chart.
Wind off the bay can be strong along the sea wall, and the harbour edges have few rails. We practise stopping, turning and holding a stick firmly before longer walks there, especially for anyone whose balance has changed after a stroke.
