Ashton-in-Makerfield is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, between Wigan and St Helens. It grew on coal mining, lock-making and nail-making, and pits such as Garswood Hall once employed thousands. Haydock Park, the racecourse just to the south, has drawn crowds from the town for generations.
Gerard Street is the main shopping street, with a mix of shops, cafés and pubs. Jubilee Park, close to the centre, has level paths and a bowling green. The Three Sisters Recreation Area, created from former colliery spoil heaps, has a lake and paths of varying steepness.
Most homes are terraced and semi-detached houses built in the twentieth century, with large post-war estates and newer developments on the edges. Many residents are former miners or their families, and breathing problems, arthritis and joint replacements are common reasons people seek our help.
NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board plans local services. Ashton patients are usually treated at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan or Whiston Hospital. Our private home physiotherapy continues the recovery after discharge.
Bryn station has trains to Wigan and Liverpool, and buses run along the A49. Patients often want to walk along Gerard Street, enjoy Jubilee Park or get to a race day at Haydock.
The parish church of St Thomas and the Catholic church of St Oswald, which holds a relic of the martyr Saint Edmund Arrowsmith, are both important to local families. Carr Mill Dam, the largest stretch of inland water in Merseyside, lies a short drive away on the St Helens side. Many of our patients remember working down the pits or in the town's engineering firms, and quite a few still meet friends at the Labour club or the bowling green in Jubilee Park, which keeps them motivated during rehabilitation.

Specialist home-based rehabilitation to improve movement, strength, balance and independence for people living with neurological conditions.

Helping older adults maintain mobility, strength and independence safely at home.

Safe, structured recovery after surgery to restore strength, mobility and function at home.
