Physiotherapy Services in Atherton
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Atherton premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Atherton, in the borough of Wigan, was known for centuries as Chowbent, and locals still call themselves Chowbenters. The town made nails by hand in small forges before coal mining and cotton spinning took over, and Chowbent Chapel, built in 1721, is one of the oldest Unitarian chapels in the north. The Fletcher family’s collieries built the model village at Howe Bridge for their miners, with its terraces, baths and village club.
Market Street runs through the centre, lined with shops and the parish church of St John the Baptist. Red-brick terraces fill the older streets, often with a doorstep straight onto the pavement and a narrow staircase, while Hag Fold and Gibfield have post-war council estates and Chanters has newer private homes.
Atherton station sits on the line between Wigan and Manchester Victoria, and the guided busway along the old Tyldesley railway gives quick buses into Manchester and Leigh. Lilford Park, on the Tyldesley side, and the green spaces around Howe Bridge give level walks for people rebuilding stamina, while Pennington Flash is a short drive away for longer outings.
The Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board oversees NHS services, and many residents are treated at Leigh Infirmary, the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan or Salford Royal for specialist care. Our private home visits pick up from those teams and continue at a pace that suits each person.
Former miners and mill workers make up a good share of older patients, often with arthritic knees, stiff backs and chest problems from years underground or in dusty mills. Sessions usually start with the front step and the stairs, then build towards the walk to Market Street and the station.
