Physiotherapy Services in Blackwood
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Blackwood premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Blackwood is a town in the Sirhowy Valley in Caerphilly county borough. It grew around coal mining and was an early centre of the Chartist movement, and it is known today as the hometown of the Manic Street Preachers.
The High Street runs along a ridge with shops, cafes and the Blackwood Miners' Institute, a theatre and arts centre. It is fairly level, and walking along it is a practical early goal.
Sirhowy Valley Country Park, to the south, has woodland and riverside paths. The flatter routes by the river suit gradually longer walks.
Blackwood is within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr in Ystrad Mynach provides local services, and major surgery and emergencies are usually at the Grange University Hospital. Private home physiotherapy can continue after discharge.
Many homes are terraced streets on the valley sides, with steep slopes and steps. We include those in walking practice as people improve.
Getting back to a show at the Miners' Institute is a goal some of our patients have, with its steps and seating.
Many residents care for family members nearby, and they are welcome to join sessions.
Blackwood's Maesycwmmer viaduct, a tall stone railway bridge, is a short drive south, and the Blackwood Miners' Institute has a busy programme of plays, pantomimes and gigs. The High Street was pedestrianised to make it easier to walk, and the benches along it give good places to stop. Further up the Sirhowy, Cwm Sirhowy's old tramroad and the Penllwyn manor house give history-minded walkers something to aim for, while the Pontllanfraith leisure centre has a gently sloped pool entry that suits hydrotherapy-style exercise later in recovery. Oakdale, a planned model village built by the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company, sits close by on the hill.
