Physiotherapy Services in Blaina
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Blaina premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Blaina is a small town in the Ebbw Fach valley in Blaenau Gwent, between Nantyglo and Abertillery. It grew around ironworks and coal mines in the nineteenth century.
The town is strung along the valley floor, with terraced streets climbing the hillsides. The main road through the valley is fairly level, while side streets are steep.
The Ebbw Fach Trail follows the river through the valley, with sculptures and level stretches. It is a good route for walking practice as stamina improves.
Blaina is within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan in Ebbw Vale provides local services, and major surgery and emergencies are usually at the Grange University Hospital. Private home physiotherapy can continue after discharge.
Many homes are terraced houses with steep stairs and steps outside. We practise those as they are, with rails or sticks where they help.
Lung and joint problems linked to industrial work are common among older residents, so we pace exercise carefully.
Families often live close together, and we are happy to show relatives how to help between visits.
The Salem chapel, the old Blaina Workmen's Hall and the cenotaph mark the centre of the town. Nantyglo Roundhouse Towers, fortified houses built by the ironmaster Crawshay Bailey to protect himself from rioting workers, are a short way north and can be reached on a gentle walking route. Cwm Celyn reservoir and the Coedcae ridge above the valley carry old drovers' and miners' paths, and the slag-heap landscapes have greened over with birch and heather. The Lido site and the Blaina Institute area are flat enough to make a sensible short circuit for someone just home from hospital.
