Brierfield is a town in the borough of Pendle in Lancashire, between Burnley and Nelson. It grew rapidly in the nineteenth century around cotton mills and nearby coal pits.
Brierfield Mills, a large former cotton mill beside the canal, has been redeveloped into a mix of homes, workspaces and leisure facilities. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs alongside, offering a level towpath.
Colne Road holds the local shops, and Victoria Park offers open green space. The hills around Pendle rise to the north, with Pendle Hill itself visible from much of the town.
Housing is largely Victorian stone terraces with inter-war semis, post-war estates and newer homes towards Reedley. Steep streets and narrow staircases are common features.
NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board commissions care. Brierfield patients are usually treated at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital or Burnley General Teaching Hospital, and we continue rehabilitation at home.
Brierfield station is on the East Lancashire line between Burnley and Colne, and buses run frequently along Colne Road. Common goals include walking to the shops, along the canal or round Victoria Park.
The canal towpath beside Brierfield Mills is flat and attractive, which makes it a reliable target after surgery.
Victoria Park has gentle slopes, so we use it to practise inclines before tackling the town's steeper roads.
Other useful targets in Brierfield include the library and Town Hall on Colne Road, the Lomeshaye industrial estate paths, and the climb up Halifax Road towards Briercliffe, which works as a later hill goal. The Northlight leisure centre inside the old mill has a pool and gym that suit the final stages of rehabilitation.

Reducing the risk of falls and improving safe, confident movement at home and in the community.
