Clay Cross is a town in North East Derbyshire, south of Chesterfield. It grew rapidly after George Stephenson's engineers dug the railway tunnel beneath it in the 1830s and discovered coal.
The Clay Cross Company, founded by Stephenson, ran collieries, ironworks and quarries here for over a century. The High Street holds the main shops, and Sharley Park offers a leisure centre and open space.
The Five Pits Trail, a path along former colliery railways, runs nearby between Grassmoor and Tibshelf. The Derbyshire countryside rises to the west towards Ashover and the Amber Valley.
Housing includes Victorian terraces, colliery houses, inter-war and post-war estates and newer developments. Many older homes have narrow stairs and steps at doors.
NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board commissions care. Clay Cross patients are usually treated at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, and we provide private physiotherapy at home after discharge.
Buses run to Chesterfield, Alfreton and Matlock, and Chesterfield is the nearest mainline station. Typical aims include walking along the High Street, to Sharley Park or onto the Five Pits Trail.
The Five Pits Trail is surfaced in many sections and mostly gentle, so it suits longer walks later in recovery.
Sharley Park has level paths and the leisure centre nearby, which makes it a handy early target.
Clay Cross Social Centre, the Market Street shops and the walk out to Danesmoor give practical routes for checking progress, while the new Tupton Way housing and the old Egstow area show how the town has changed since the last pits and the ironworks closed. The gentle rise along High Street past St Bartholomew's Church is a handy measure of returning leg strength.

Assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor to support bladder, bowel and core function.

Supporting people living with or recovering from cancer to rebuild strength and quality of life.

Personalised, evidence-based nutrition and dietetic support delivered in the comfort of your home by an HCPC-registered dietitian.
