Dinnington is a former pit town in the borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Dinnington Main Colliery opened in the early twentieth century and transformed a small farming village into a busy mining community, before closing in 1992.
Laughton Road and the surrounding streets hold most of the shops and services, and the old colliery site has been redeveloped. Anston Stones Wood, a limestone gorge with ancient woodland and wildflowers, lies just to the south and offers sheltered walks.
Roche Abbey, the ruins of a Cistercian monastery set in a landscaped valley by Capability Brown, is a short drive north-east near Maltby. The church of All Hallows at Laughton-en-le-Morthen, with its tall spire, is a landmark across the surrounding farmland.
Housing includes colliery-era terraces, post-war council estates and newer developments, particularly around the Anstons. Many residents have mining backgrounds, and breathing and joint problems are common reasons for physiotherapy.
NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board plans services, and Dinnington patients are usually treated at Rotherham General Hospital. Our home physiotherapy continues their rehabilitation locally.
Goals include walking to the shops, exploring Anston Stones Wood or visiting Roche Abbey again.
Dinnington's library and community centre are well used by older residents. Lindrick Golf Club, on the common at the edge of the Anstons, once hosted the Ryder Cup in 1957, when Great Britain and Ireland won. The Chesterfield Canal passes close by at Kiveton and Turnerwood, where a quiet towpath winds between locks and limestone cuttings,, a favourite spot for local dog walkers.
