Formby is a coastal town in Sefton, between Liverpool and Southport, best known for its huge sand dunes and pinewoods. The National Trust reserve at Freshfield is one of the last strongholds of the red squirrel in England, and prehistoric footprints are sometimes revealed in the mud on the shore when tides shift the sand.
Homes are mainly detached and semi-detached houses and bungalows with gardens, many built from the 1950s onwards. Front drives and stairs are typical challenges, while bungalows make life easier for people recovering from operations.
Formby and Freshfield stations are on the Merseyrail Northern line, with frequent trains to Liverpool and Southport. Chapel Lane and the village centre have shops and cafés on level ground, while the dunes and woodland paths are for later stages of recovery.
Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board plans NHS services, with Southport and Formby District General Hospital providing local acute care. Our private home visits continue recovery after discharge.
Many residents are retired and keen to get back to walking on the beach, in the pinewoods or around the village. We set goals around those activities, building strength and balance gradually.
Formby was once famous for asparagus grown in the sandy fields behind the dunes, and the National Trust has revived a few of the old plots near Victoria Road. The pinewoods were planted partly to stabilise the shifting sand, and the coastline is still retreating each year, so paths change. Lifeboat Road, where Britain’s first lifeboat station is said to have stood, leads down to the shore.
