Harleston is a small market town in south Norfolk, close to the Suffolk border along the River Waveney. A Wednesday market has been held here since the thirteenth century, and the centre keeps a strong local character.
The Thoroughfare and the Market Place are the core of the town, with a Georgian clock tower at their meeting point. The streets are level, making a walk around the clock tower a simple early target.
Redenhall church, with its tall Perpendicular tower, stands on a rise just outside the town. The lane up to it gives a gentle hill to practise on once walking on level streets feels secure.
The Waveney valley meadows run along the southern edge of the town. Footpaths through them can be soft after rain, so we save them for later sessions when balance on uneven ground has improved.
Many homes in the centre are older townhouses with narrow, steep stairs and small courtyards behind. Newer estates on the Station Hill side often have more open layouts and easier access for walking aids.
Most planned surgery for the area takes place at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, with some people going to the James Paget in Gorleston. Rehabilitation then continues once they are home.
Starston, Mendham and Wortwell lie along the river and lanes around the town. Homes there are often detached farmhouses or cottages with gravel drives and outside steps that we include in practice.
Harleston has a busy calendar of local events, including the Harleston and Waveney Festival. Getting to these is a motivating social goal for people who have been housebound after an operation.
Many residents here have spent their lives working on farms or in local trades. We often focus on practical activities such as gardening, carrying shopping and climbing stiles in the countryside.
