Physiotherapy Services in Hay-on-Wye
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Hay-on-Wye premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Hay-on-Wye sits on the River Wye right on the Wales-England border, at the northern edge of the Black Mountains. It is famous as a town of bookshops and for the Hay Festival each spring.
The centre is compact, with Broad Street, Castle Street and the clock tower all close together. The streets have gentle slopes, so a short loop around the bookshops is a pleasant early outdoor target.
The Hay Festival brings thousands of visitors each year. For local people recovering from surgery, walking around the festival site and managing crowds can be a motivating goal to plan towards.
The riverside path along the Wye, reached from the bridge, is fairly level but can be muddy. We use it for balance practice on mixed surfaces once people are walking steadily on pavements.
Hay Bluff and the Gospel Pass rise to the south. Many keen walkers we see want to return to these hills, so we build hill climbing and stamina work into later sessions with that aim.
Powys Teaching Health Board covers the Welsh side of the town, and many people are treated at Hereford County Hospital across the border. We continue rehabilitation once they return home.
Homes in the centre are often older stone or brick townhouses with steep stairs and small rooms. Cusop and Clyro, just outside town, have more cottages and farmhouses with garden steps and drives.
Clyro, across the river, is linked to the diarist Francis Kilvert. Walks between the two villages along quiet lanes make a good later goal for people building up their walking range.
Because the town straddles the border, some residents have GPs in England and others in Wales. We work with the relevant teams on either side so plans stay clear and joined up.
