Kirkby-in-Ashfield is a former mining town in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire, close to the Derbyshire border. Its pits, including Summit, Bentinck and Annesley, employed thousands until the 1980s and 1990s. The cricketer Harold Larwood, the fast bowler at the centre of the Bodyline series, was born in nearby Nuncargate and worked down the pit as a boy.
The town centre around Station Street and the Kingsway has shops, and Portland Park, with its lake and nature reserve, provides level, peaceful paths. Annesley Hall, linked with Lord Byron's love for Mary Chaworth, stands just to the south. The former colliery sites have been turned into country parks and woodland.
Most homes are terraces and semis built for mining families, along with post-war council estates and new housing on former industrial land. Many residents are retired miners and their families, and breathing problems, back pain and arthritis are very common.
Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board plans NHS care. Kirkby patients are usually treated at King's Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Our private home physiotherapy continues their rehabilitation after discharge.
Kirkby-in-Ashfield station is on the Robin Hood Line between Nottingham and Mansfield. Patients often want to walk to Station Street, enjoy Portland Park or take the train to Nottingham.
Summit Colliery once employed thousands here, and miners' institutes and welfare grounds still shape the layout of Kirkby and neighbouring Annesley Woodhouse. Portland Park, a local nature reserve on reclaimed railway land, has ponds, wildflower banks and firm paths. The Festival Hall leisure centre on Hodgkinson Road is a familiar venue for gentle swimming, and the Robin Hood Line station means grandchildren in Nottingham or Mansfield are only a short ride away, which motivates plenty of people to practise steps and platforms.
