Physiotherapy Services in Kirkwall
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Kirkwall premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Kirkwall is the main town of Orkney, built around its harbour on the north side of the Mainland island. St Magnus Cathedral, begun in 1137 and built in red and yellow sandstone, dominates the town, and the Bishop's and Earl's Palaces stand beside it. The narrow, flagstoned main street, which changes name from Bridge Street to Albert Street and Broad Street, winds through the old centre.
The flagstones and narrow lanes can be uneven and slippery, which matters after an operation or a fall. Older houses near the centre are stone-built with steep stairs, while Papdale, Pickaquoy and Glaitness have post-war and modern homes, including many bungalows. Wind and weather often shape when and where we practise outdoors.
The harbour front and the Peedie Sea, a small lagoon with a path around it, give level walking close to the centre. The Pickaquoy Centre, the town's leisure complex, has paths around it, and Scapa beach, a short trip south, is a lovely longer goal. Ferries from Kirkwall link to the North Isles, and many people want to manage the ferry ramps again.
NHS Orkney provides hospital care at The Balfour, the islands' modern hospital in Kirkwall, and some specialist treatment takes place in Aberdeen. Community rehabilitation is coordinated through the Orkney Health and Social Care Partnership. We work independently and can coordinate with your local team.
