Loughton, in the Epping Forest district of Essex, sits on the eastern edge of Epping Forest, just beyond the London boundary. The forest was saved for public use in the nineteenth century after a long campaign, helped by a local labourer, Thomas Willingale, who defied attempts to stop villagers cutting wood. Loughton Camp, an Iron Age earthwork, lies hidden among the trees.
High Road is the main shopping street, lined with cafés, restaurants and independent shops, while the Broadway in Debden serves the large estate built by the London County Council after the war. The town is surprisingly hilly, particularly around Goldings Hill and towards the forest, so slopes feature in most walking goals.
Epping Forest itself has a mix of surfaced paths and rough, muddy tracks. Many patients start near the edge, at places like Strawberry Hill Ponds or the paths around Baldwins Hill, before trying longer forest walks. Housing ranges from Victorian villas and Arts and Crafts houses to the post-war Debden estate.
Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board plans NHS care. Loughton residents are commonly treated at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow or Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone. Our private home physiotherapy picks up after discharge.
Loughton and Debden stations are on the Central line, giving direct Underground access to central London. Many patients want to manage the station steps, get to High Road for coffee or return to their regular forest walk.
