Maghull is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, north of Liverpool. It was a farming village until the twentieth century, when it grew rapidly as a commuter suburb. Frank Hornby, inventor of Meccano and Hornby model trains, lived here and is buried at St Andrew's Church. The small medieval chapel in St Andrew's churchyard, dating from the thirteenth century, is one of the oldest buildings in Merseyside.
Maghull Square holds the main shops, while the Leeds-Liverpool waterway crosses the town on its way north, with a long, level towpath that is ideal for building walking. Maghull also has a long association with mental health care through Moss Side and Ashworth hospitals, now part of the area's NHS estate.
Housing is mainly inter-war and post-war semi-detached houses and bungalows, with newer estates at Waddicar and Lydiate. Many residents are older people, and falls, arthritis and joint replacements are among the most common reasons for referral.
Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board plans NHS services. Maghull patients are usually treated at Aintree University Hospital or Southport and Formby District General Hospital. Our private home physiotherapy continues their recovery once they are home.
Maghull and Maghull North stations have Merseyrail trains to Liverpool and Ormskirk. Patients often want to walk to Maghull Square, follow the canal or take the train into Liverpool.
Maghull's oldest building, the small medieval chapel of St Andrew, stands in the churchyard beside the Victorian parish church on Damfield Lane. Frank Hornby, inventor of Meccano and Hornby trains, lived in the town and is buried at the old church. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through Maghull towards Lydiate and Melling, giving a long, level towpath that suits walking practice, and the Merseyrail Northern Line station connects quickly with Ormskirk and Liverpool.
