Newport is the county town of the Isle of Wight, set at the head of the River Medina estuary in the middle of the island. Carisbrooke Castle, on a hill just to the south-west, is where Charles I was imprisoned before his trial and execution. The Quay Arts centre stands by the old harbour, and the Isle of Wight Festival is held each summer at Seaclose Park.
The town centre has Georgian and Victorian buildings around St James’s Square, with older terraces and post-war estates spreading towards Pan, Parkhurst and Carisbrooke. Some streets climb towards Carisbrooke and Hunnyhill, and many homes have stairs and front steps.
Newport has no railway, but it is the hub of the island’s bus network, with services to every main town. A cycle and walking path follows the old railway line along the Medina towards Cowes, giving a flat, traffic-free route ideal for later stages of recovery.
St Mary’s Hospital, the island’s main general hospital, is in Newport. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board plans NHS services, and our private home physiotherapy continues recovery after discharge.
Many patients want to get back to shopping in town, walking along the Medina or visiting Carisbrooke Castle. We plan sessions around those goals.
St Thomas’s Minster in St James’s Square holds the tomb of Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of Charles I who died while held at Carisbrooke, with a monument commissioned by Queen Victoria. The remains of a Roman villa, with a reconstructed garden, are open to visitors on Cypress Road, and Quay Arts runs a café and gallery by the water.
