Newport is a market town in the borough of Telford and Wrekin in Shropshire, north-east of Telford near the Staffordshire border. Its long, broad High Street is lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings.
St Nicholas' Church stands on an island in the middle of the High Street, a striking feature of the town centre. Harper Adams University, one of the country's leading agricultural colleges, lies just to the west at Edgmond.
Victoria Park offers open space and paths beside the restored section of the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal. Lilleshall Hall and its national sports centre, and the Lilleshall monument on its hill, are close by.
Housing includes historic townhouses in the centre, Victorian and Edwardian terraces, inter-war homes and modern estates to the north and east. Many newer homes have open-plan ground floors and garages.
NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care Board commissions care. Newport patients are usually treated at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, and we continue their rehabilitation at home.
Buses run to Telford, Stafford and Shrewsbury, and Telford Central is the nearest station. Typical aims include walking along the High Street, round Victoria Park or along the canal path.
The High Street is wide and almost flat, so it suits early walks with regular rests on the benches near the church.
The canal path in Victoria Park is short and level, which makes it a good stepping stone before longer country walks.
The Cosy Hall arts venue, the shops along Stafford Street and the sports centre at Burton Borough School are other popular targets, and the Saturday market on the High Street gives many patients a strong reason to get out again.
