Pontarddulais, known locally as Bont, sits on the River Loughor at the north-western edge of the City and County of Swansea, where it meets Carmarthenshire. Welsh is spoken widely on its streets, and the town has a strong cultural identity built around chapels, choirs and rugby.
In 1843 the Rebecca Riots reached the tollgate at Pontarddulais, where men disguised in women's clothing attacked the gate in protest against road tolls and were confronted by police. The episode is remembered locally as one of the most dramatic of the riots.
The Pontarddulais Male Choir and the Pontarddulais Town Band have won national competitions, and the rugby club is a focal point. St Teilo Street holds the shops and cafés, while the riverside and the park beside the Dulais give level walking near the centre.
Cefn Drum, a hill to the south-east, offers open walking with views over the Loughor estuary and Gower. Housing is mainly stone and brick terraces from the tinplate and coal era, plus post-war homes and newer estates in Hendy and Fforest. Steep hillside streets are common.
Swansea Bay University Health Board provides local care, and most patients are treated at Morriston Hospital or Singleton Hospital in Swansea. Our home physiotherapy continues their recovery in the community, and we can work with Welsh-speaking families.
Goals include singing with the choir again, walking along the river or watching the rugby at the club.
