Southend-on-Sea is a seaside city on the Thames estuary in south-east Essex, with the longest pleasure pier in the world stretching more than a mile out to sea. The seafront runs from Leigh-on-Sea through Chalkwell and Westcliff to Thorpe Bay and Shoeburyness, and is mostly level, though the cliffs behind it are steep.
Homes include Victorian and Edwardian houses in Westcliff and Leigh, many divided into flats, inter-war semis in Eastwood and Prittlewell, and larger houses at Thorpe Bay. Many older residents live in bungalows. We plan our sessions around the stairs and layout of each home, and the routes to the seafront.
The seafront promenade is flat and long, and the Cliff Gardens offer more challenging slopes and steps. Priory Park and Chalkwell Park have level paths and gardens. The pier has its own railway. Southend has stations on two lines to London. Goals often include walking along the seafront, getting to the High Street or catching the train.
Southend University Hospital provides acute care for the area. We are independent of it and of the NHS, so please share your discharge summary and any precautions. We then design exercises around your recovery and home.
Southend-on-Sea is famous for its pier, the longest pleasure pier in the world, stretching far into the Thames estuary, with a train for those who cannot walk its full length. Adventure Island and the Cliffs Pavilion are popular attractions, and Priory Park and Chalkwell Park have level paths. Leigh-on-Sea, to the west, keeps a fishing village feel. We help people build up to walking the seafront or part of the pier again. Hadleigh Castle ruins, overlooking the estuary to the west, and the Hadleigh Country Park trails are popular goals for steady walkers.
