Stone is a canal town in the Borough of Stafford, in Staffordshire, on the River Trent between Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent. Its fortunes were tied to the Trent and Mersey Canal, which opened in the 1770s and whose company headquarters were based here. Joule's Brewery, famous for its red cross trademark, was a local institution for generations and has since been revived.
The High Street is a pleasant, mostly pedestrianised stretch of independent shops, pubs and cafés, with a monthly farmers' market. The canal runs right past the town centre, with boatyards, locks and a level towpath, and Westbridge Park, alongside the Trent, offers flat paths, a lake and plenty of benches. Stone hosts a popular annual food and drink festival.
Housing includes Georgian and Victorian townhouses near the centre, inter-war semis in Walton and newer estates around the edges. Many residents are older people who chose Stone for its friendly, small-town feel, and joint replacements and recovery after falls are among the most frequent reasons for referral.
Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board plans NHS services. Stone patients are usually treated at the Royal Stoke University Hospital or County Hospital in Stafford. Our private home physiotherapy continues their rehabilitation after they are discharged.
Stone station has trains to Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford and Birmingham. For patients here, typical hopes are to wander the High Street on market day, stroll the canal towpath or sit by the lake in Westbridge Park again.
