Stow-on-the-Wold is a small market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire. It stands on a hilltop where several old roads meet, including the Roman Fosse Way.
The town is the highest in the Cotswolds and is known for its exposed position. The saying goes that Stow is where the wind blows cold.
The large Market Square, once used for great sheep fairs, is surrounded by honey-coloured stone buildings. It is mostly level and makes a good place to practise walking.
St Edward's Church has a famous north door framed by two ancient yew trees. The churchyard paths near it are quiet and fairly flat.
Most operations for this area take place at Cheltenham General or Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Afterwards, our physiotherapists can visit you at home in Stow.
Many homes are old stone cottages with steep stairs and small rooms. We plan exercises that fit safely into these traditional houses.
Narrow alleys called tures run from the square to the edge of town. These were used to herd sheep and are short but uneven.
Maugersbury, just south-east, is a small hamlet reached by a sloping lane. Walking there and back is a good later target.
Lower and Upper Slaughter lie in the valley to the south-west beside the River Eye. Their riverside paths are gentle and very pretty.
Broadwell and Longborough lie to the north, and Bourton-on-the-Water to the south has shops and level riverside walks.
