We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Stranraer is the largest town in Wigtownshire, in the far south-west of Scotland, at the head of Loch Ryan. For more than a century it was the main ferry port for Northern Ireland, until services moved a few miles up the loch to Cairnryan in 2011. The Castle of St John, a sixteenth-century tower house in the town centre, now houses a museum.
Agnew Park, on the seafront, has a boating lake, miniature railway and flat paths, and the marina and waterfront are being redeveloped. George Street and the streets around the castle hold the shops. Castle Kennedy Gardens, a short trip east, have spectacular walks between two lochs.
Housing includes Victorian terraces, sandstone houses, post-war council estates such as Hillhead, and bungalows on the edges. The town has many older residents, and long journeys to specialist hospitals make good local rehabilitation especially important.
NHS Dumfries and Galloway provides health services, working with Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership. Stranraer has the Galloway Community Hospital, but many patients travel to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in Dumfries for specialist care. Our private home physiotherapy continues their recovery.
Stranraer station has trains to Ayr and Glasgow, and buses link the Rhins and Machars. Patients often want to walk the seafront, get to George Street or visit Castle Kennedy Gardens.
Stranraer's Castle of St John, a sixteenth-century tower house in the heart of town, once held Covenanters as prisoners and now houses a small museum. Agnew Park beside Loch Ryan has a boating lake and promenade, and the Stranraer Oyster Festival brings visitors each September. Since the Irish ferries moved to Cairnryan, the harbour front has become quieter. Castle Kennedy Gardens, a few miles east, offers broad avenues of monkey puzzle trees and rhododendrons that suit unhurried walking.
