Thornbury is a market town in South Gloucestershire, north of Bristol, close to the Severn estuary. Its wide High Street, lined with independent shops, cafés and pubs, retains much of its old character, and the town has a strong community spirit.
Thornbury Castle, a Tudor palace begun by the Duke of Buckingham and visited by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, is now a hotel. Beside it stands St Mary's Church, with its tall tower and peaceful churchyard.
The Severn Way runs along the estuary shore near Oldbury-on-Severn, offering flat walking with views of the Severn bridges. Thornbury Leisure Centre and Mundy Playing Fields provide local exercise space.
Housing includes old stone houses in the centre, post-war estates and newer developments at Park Farm. Many residents are retired, and steps and stairs in older homes often become a focus of rehabilitation.
NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board plans local care, and Thornbury patients are usually treated at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Our home physiotherapy continues their recovery locally.
Goals include walking the High Street, strolling the Severn Way or visiting the castle gardens again.
Thornbury's Armstrong Hall, the St Mary Centre and the regular markets bring people into town, while the Thornbury Carnival fills the High Street with floats. The decommissioned Oldbury nuclear power station is a recognisable landmark on the shore, and Oldbury Pill, a tidal creek with a small sailing club, is a peaceful place to sit. Mundy Playing Fields give open, level space, and the Thornbury and District Museum on Chapel Street displays local finds from Roman times onwards.
