Whitburn is a coastal village in South Tyneside, sitting between South Shields and Sunderland. It has kept a village feel, with a green and old stone houses.
Front Street runs through the old centre, lined with cottages, pubs and shops. It is fairly level, which makes it a useful route for early walking.
Whitburn Hall once stood near the village, and the author Lewis Carroll often visited relatives here. Some say the Walrus and the Carpenter was inspired by the beach.
Souter Lighthouse, painted in bold red and white bands, stands on the cliffs to the north. Opened in 1871, it was the first lighthouse designed to use electric light.
The Leas, a long stretch of clifftop grassland, runs from Souter towards South Shields. Its paths are wide and gentle, ideal for building stamina.
South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital carry out most surgery for local residents. Our physiotherapists then visit you at home in Whitburn.
Whitburn beach is long and sandy, with a promenade linking it to Seaburn. The promenade is flat and has benches along the way.
Homes include old cottages, inter-war semis and newer estates. We plan stair work and transfers around each layout.
Cleadon, inland, has a hilltop windmill and a nature reserve. East Boldon lies further west with its own shops and station.
Marsden, to the north, is known for Marsden Rock and the Grotto pub in the cliffs. Seaburn and Fulwell lie south towards Sunderland.
Many clients here are older adults who enjoy walking by the sea. Strength and balance work helps them keep doing that safely.

Specialist home-based rehabilitation to improve movement, strength, balance and independence for people living with neurological conditions.

Helping older adults maintain mobility, strength and independence safely at home.

Safe, structured recovery after surgery to restore strength, mobility and function at home.
