Witney is a market town in West Oxfordshire, on the River Windrush at the edge of the Cotswolds. It was famous for blanket making for centuries, and the old Witney Blanket Hall still stands on the High Street. The Buttercross, a seventeenth-century market shelter, and the long Church Green, leading to St Mary's Church, give the centre its character.
The town has grown greatly since the 1960s, with large estates at Deer Park, Madley Park and Cogges and newer developments on the edges. Older streets near the centre have Cotswold stone cottages with steep stairs, while many newer homes are two- or three-storey family houses. The town is fairly flat, with gentle slopes towards the river.
The Windrush valley paths and Cogges Manor Farm, a historic farm museum beside the river, are popular walking goals, and Witney Lakes, to the west, has paths around the water. The Marriott's Walk and Woolgate shopping centres and the High Street cover most errands. Witney has no railway station, so buses to Oxford are the main link. Langel Common, a flat riverside meadow close to the town centre, is a gentle early target before the longer Windrush routes.
Most hospital care is provided by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, at the John Radcliffe Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, with community services at Witney Community Hospital. The Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West integrated care board plans services. We visit privately and fit around your care.
