Physiotherapy Services in Workington
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Workington premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Workington is a port town on the west coast of Cumbria, at the mouth of the River Derwent, now within the Cumberland council area. It grew on coal mining and steelmaking; the Moss Bay works pioneered the Bessemer process and produced rails used across the world until the steelworks closed. Workington Hall, where Mary, Queen of Scots stayed in 1568 on her first night in England after fleeing across the Solway, stands in ruins in Curwen Park.
The town centre around Washington Square, Murray Road and Pow Street is pedestrian-friendly, and Vulcan Park offers level paths near the centre. The coastal path along the harbour and the old steelworks site gives broad sea views towards Scotland. Workington is also famous for Uppies and Downies, a mass ball game played across town each Easter.
Housing ranges from Victorian terraces near the centre to post-war council estates such as Salterbeck and Moorclose. Many patients are former steelworkers or miners and their families, and the town's hills, particularly towards Harrington, are a common challenge.
North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board plans NHS care. Workington patients are generally treated at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven or the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, with some services at Workington Community Hospital. Our private home physiotherapy continues the recovery.
Workington station is on the Cumbrian Coast Line, with trains to Carlisle and Barrow. Typical aims include walking into town, getting to the harbour or catching the train again.
Mary Queen of Scots spent a night at Workington Hall in 1568 after fleeing Langside, and the ruined hall still stands within Curwen Park. Every Easter the town plays Uppies and Downies, a rough-and-tumble ball game between harbour and hill families that has run for centuries. The Helena Thompson Museum on Park End Road tells the steelmaking story, and Vulcan Park beside the old cricket ground is a sheltered spot for rebuilding confidence before tackling the breezier seafront towards Harrington.
