Physiotherapy After Pregnancy: When Can You Start Exercising Again?
Having a baby brings many changes to your body. Your abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, back and joints may need time to recover. Postnatal physiotherapy can help you rebuild strength, improve mobility and return to exercise safely.
When Can You Start Exercising After Pregnancy?
If you had a straightforward birth, gentle activity such as walking, gentle stretches and pelvic floor exercises can usually begin when you feel ready. More demanding or high-impact exercise should be introduced gradually, with advice from your healthcare professional.
If you had a C-section or a more complicated delivery, your recovery may take longer. Your midwife, GP or physiotherapist can guide you on when it is safe to increase activity.
How Can Physiotherapy Help After Pregnancy?
A postnatal physiotherapist can help with:
- Pelvic floor weakness
- Back or pelvic pain
- Abdominal muscle weakness
- Diastasis recti
- Bladder leakage
- Returning to exercise
- Improving strength and mobility
Your physiotherapist can create a personalised postnatal exercise programme based on your recovery and goals.
How Should You Return to Exercise?
Start gently and increase activity gradually. Walking, pelvic floor exercises and gentle strengthening can be a good starting point. High-impact activities such as running and jumping should not be rushed.
If you experience pain, bladder or bowel leakage, or a feeling of pressure or bulging, speak to a pelvic health physiotherapist before progressing your exercise.
