Ballyclare is a market town in south County Antrim, on the Six Mile Water. It is best known for its May Fair, a centuries-old horse fair that still draws crowds to the town each May, with traders, amusements and horse dealing in the streets. The town was once also known for its paper mill, which operated for many years beside the river.
The Six Mile Water runs through the town, and a riverside walk gives a level, pleasant route close to the centre. The Square, with its town hall, is the heart of Ballyclare, surrounded by shops and cafés. Ballyclare Comrades football club has long been part of local life.
The town is fairly level in the centre, with gentle slopes towards the river and up to newer estates on the edges. Housing ranges from older terraces to large modern estates built for commuters to Belfast. Buses link Ballyclare with Belfast and Antrim, and the M2 is close by.
The Northern Health and Social Care Trust provides health and social care, with most patients going to Antrim Area Hospital for surgery and emergencies. Our private home physiotherapy fits around that care after discharge.
Typical goals include walking to the Square, strolling beside the river or getting to the May Fair. We focus on stamina, kerbs and slopes, and practise getting on and off buses where needed.
Dixon Park, beside the Six Mile Water close to the town centre, has riverside lawns and a playground that grandparents often want to reach again. A short drive south at Templepatrick, Patterson’s Spade Mill, kept by the National Trust, is a water-powered mill where spades are still forged by hand, and its yard and buildings make a manageable visit.
