Physiotherapy Services in Barking & Dagenham
Barking and Dagenham is an east London borough with Newham and Redbridge to the west and north, Havering to the east and the Thames along its southern edge. As well as Barking itself it takes in Dagenham, Becontree, Chadwell Heath, Marks Gate, Rush Green and the newer riverside neighbourhood at Barking Riverside. This page is about the borough as a whole; if you live in or near Barking town centre, our separate Barking page looks at that town in more detail. Chadwell Heath and Goodmayes sit close to the Redbridge boundary, so the postcode checker is the reliable way to confirm where you are.
We do not operate a clinic in Barking & Dagenham; our physiotherapy appointments are provided in patients' homes. The physiotherapist who visits may live some distance away and travel to you. Whether a visit is possible depends on your exact postcode and on who is available at the time, so please use the postcode checker on this page rather than relying on the name of your street or neighbourhood.
There is no major hospital with an A&E department inside the borough. Many residents are treated at Queen's Hospital in Romford or King George Hospital in Goodmayes, both run by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, while others come home from hospitals elsewhere in London. Home Physio And Rehab is an independent service and is not part of that trust or of the NHS. If you were given a discharge summary or a list of exercises on the ward, have it to hand for the first appointment so your physiotherapist can pick up where the hospital team left off.
Much of the borough was built as the Becontree estate between the two world wars, at the time one of the largest council housing developments anywhere, so many homes are two-storey cottages with a short front path, a step at the door and a narrow, steep staircase. Elsewhere there are post-war tower blocks, newer flats at Barking Riverside with lifts and long corridors, and older terraces around Barking town. Early sessions often concentrate on the front step, the stairs and getting safely in and out of the bath or shower, because those moves decide whether someone can manage comfortably at home.
Longer-term goals tend to be local and practical: walking to the bus stop on Heathway or Green Lane, getting to Dagenham Heathway or Becontree station, a circuit of Parsloes Park or Valence Park, or a gentle walk at Eastbrookend Country Park. Your physiotherapist will set goals with you, rehearse them when it is safe to, and change the plan as your strength and confidence improve.
