Chadderton is a town in the Oldham borough, on the north-western side of Greater Manchester. At its peak in the early twentieth century it had dozens of cotton mills, and several of the huge brick buildings still stand along the canal and the main roads. Today it is largely residential, with easy links to Oldham and Manchester.
Many streets are lined with red-brick terraces with steep stairs and a step straight onto the pavement, especially around Busk and Butler Green. Firwood Park, Nordens and Chadderton Park have interwar and post-war semis and bungalows. There are also flats and sheltered housing for older residents. We focus on the steps and rooms you find hardest.
Chadderton Hall Park and Foxdenton Park, with the historic Foxdenton Hall, are popular places to build up walking. The town centre around Middleton Road and the Chadderton Town Centre retail area is where most errands happen. The Metrolink has stops at Freehold and South Chadderton, which makes trips into Manchester or Oldham possible again once walking is safe.
The Royal Oldham Hospital, part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, provides most hospital care for Chadderton residents. NHS services are planned by NHS Greater Manchester, the Integrated Care Board for the area. We visit independently and can continue the rehabilitation started on the ward.
Broadway and the A663 split the town into eastern and western halves, and crossing it safely is a practical goal for many people. The Rochdale Canal skirts the southern edge near Failsworth, while the old Stotts and Rugby mills stand as reminders of the spinning trade. Chadderton Sports Centre and the Grimshaw Lane shops are other common outings.
