Chapel-en-le-Frith is a small market town in the High Peak of Derbyshire and calls itself the Capital of the Peak. Its cobbled Market Place, with the old market cross and stocks, sits at the top of the town near the church of St Thomas Becket.
The town takes its name from a chapel built in the forest by local foresters in the thirteenth century. Stone cottages, pubs and shops line the Market Place and the steep streets running down to the main road.
The town is hilly, with steep climbs between the main road and the Market Place. Those slopes can be a real challenge after a hip or knee replacement, so we often start with flatter routes and build up gradually.
Housing is mostly stone cottages and terraces, with some newer estates on the edges. Many homes have steep stairs and steps up from the road, which we plan around carefully in our sessions.
Chapel-en-le-Frith falls within NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board. Many residents are treated at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, and once they are discharged we can continue rehabilitation privately at home.
The town has a station on the line between Manchester and Buxton, and buses run to Buxton and Glossop. Getting to the station or the Market Place shops is a practical goal for many people.
Combs Reservoir lies just to the west, with a level path along part of its shore that is good for gentle walks. Chinley and Dove Holes are hillside villages with stone walls and steep lanes.
Peak District weather can change quickly, so we plan outdoor practice for calmer days and teach people how to manage wet, slippery ground.
