Farnham is a market town in the Waverley district of Surrey, on the River Wey close to the Hampshire border. Farnham Castle, begun in the twelfth century as a residence for the Bishops of Winchester, overlooks the wide Georgian Castle Street, one of the finest streets of its kind in England. The writer William Cobbett was born here in 1763, and the Jolly Farmer pub where he grew up is now named after him.
The town centre is compact, with Castle Street, West Street and the Lion and Lamb Yard holding shops and cafés. Gostrey Meadow, beside the Wey, is a small, level park, and Farnham Park, a former deer park stretching up from the castle, has gentle slopes and open grassland. The Farnham Maltings is an arts centre in a restored brewery building.
Housing includes Georgian and Victorian townhouses near the centre, inter-war and post-war homes at Hale and Weybourne, and larger houses in Rowledge and Boundstone. Many Farnham residents are retired, so falls and joint replacements are common reasons for referral.
Frimley Integrated Care Board plans NHS care. Farnham patients are usually treated at Frimley Park Hospital or the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, with some services at Farnham Hospital. Our private home physiotherapy continues their rehabilitation.
Farnham station has trains to London Waterloo and Alton. Patients often want to walk up Castle Street, enjoy Farnham Park or visit the Maltings.
Farnham Castle, home of the Bishops of Winchester for centuries, overlooks Castle Street with its wide Georgian frontages. William Cobbett, the radical writer, was born in the town, and the pub that bears his name stands on Bridge Square. Farnham Park, behind the castle, has open grassland and gentle slopes, while Waverley Abbey, the first Cistercian house in England, lies by the Wey to the south-east. Frensham Ponds and the Bourne Woods offer sandy heathland trails for later stages of recovery.
