Grantown-on-Spey was laid out in 1765 by Sir James Grant as a planned town. Its broad tree-lined Square and granite buildings still give the centre a calm, orderly layout within the Cairngorms National Park.
The Square is wide and largely level, with shops and cafes along both sides. A walk from the war memorial to the bottom of the High Street is a useful early outdoor goal after surgery.
Anagach Woods, a community-owned pine forest, starts at the edge of town. Its waymarked paths range from flat forest tracks to rooty trails down to the river, so we can grade outings as strength improves.
The Speyside Way passes close to the old Spey bridge. Many people here are keen walkers or anglers, and returning to the riverbank on uneven ground is a common later goal we plan towards.
NHS Highland provides care in Badenoch and Strathspey. The Ian Charles Community Hospital in Grantown offers local beds and outpatient services, while surgery is usually at Raigmore in Inverness.
Housing includes granite villas with steep front steps, former shooting lodges divided into flats, and newer homes towards Woodlands. Each comes with different stair and access issues we look at during visits.
Winter in Strathspey brings ice and snow. We plan extra balance work before the cold months so people feel steadier walking along The Square and Woodside Avenue when pavements are slippery.
Cromdale, Dulnain Bridge and Nethy Bridge are scattered villages along the valley. Many homes there are rural cottages with gravel drives and outside steps, which we include in practical walking practice.
The Strathspey Railway runs heritage steam trains from Broomhill, near Dulnain Bridge, to Aviemore. A trip on it can be a fun and motivating goal once longer outings feel manageable again.
