Higham Ferrers is a small historic town on high ground above the River Nene, next to Rushden. It was one of the boroughs of the Duchy of Lancaster and retains its medieval street pattern.
Archbishop Henry Chichele, founder of All Souls College in Oxford, was born here around 1362. He founded Chichele College in the town, whose ruins stand on College Street.
The parish church of St Mary has a soaring spire, and the churchyard holds a bede house and chantry chapel. Together they form one of the finest medieval groups in the county.
Kettering General Hospital and Northampton General treat most Higham Ferrers people. When you come home, we continue your physiotherapy in familiar surroundings.
The Market Square and High Street include a few shops, pubs and a bakery, and the town is quieter than neighbouring Rushden. Many residents are retired.
Rushden Lakes, a shopping and leisure complex beside the Nene Wetlands, offers level waterside paths and is a popular place for patients to rebuild walking.
Chelveston, Caldecott and Newton Bromswold are rural villages with farmland and narrow lanes, and the old airfield at Chelveston was once a large American base.
Older stone homes in the town often have steep stairs and uneven floors, and we make those a focus of practical sessions.
Boot and shoe making employed much of the local workforce in the twentieth century, and Higham's old factories and workshops can still be picked out among the limestone houses of Kimbolton Road.
