Houghton-le-Spring is a town in the City of Sunderland, a few miles south-west of Sunderland city centre. It grew up around coal mining, and Houghton Colliery and the surrounding pits shaped the town for well over a century.
The parish church of St Michael and All Angels dates back to Norman times and is linked with Bernard Gilpin, the sixteenth-century rector known as the Apostle of the North. Houghton Feast, held each October, is one of the oldest community festivals in the region.
Houghton Hillside, once the town cemetery, is now a nature reserve with woodland paths and views across Wearside. Penshaw Monument stands on its hill to the north, and Herrington Country Park nearby has wide surfaced paths around a lake.
Homes range from Victorian terraces off Newbottle Street and Sunderland Street to former colliery housing, post-war estates and newer developments towards Shiney Row. Terraced houses there usually come with a steep staircase and a yard behind.
Care is commissioned by NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board. Most local patients are admitted to Sunderland Royal Hospital, and we continue their recovery privately once they are back home.
Buses run regularly to Sunderland, Durham and Washington. Typical goals include walking into Newbottle Street for shopping, attending the Feast or reaching Herrington Country Park.
Herrington Country Park is a good next step after the town pavements, because its lakeside path is wide, smooth and has plenty of places to stop.
Houghton Hillside is steeper and more uneven, so we save it for people working towards woodland walks or a climb towards Penshaw Monument.
