Kilwinning is a town in North Ayrshire, on the River Garnock just inland from Irvine. It grew around Kilwinning Abbey, founded in the twelfth century, whose ruins still stand at the heart of the town. Kilwinning is also known as the home of Mother Lodge Kilwinning No. 0, one of the oldest masonic lodges in the world, and the Papingo archery contest held at the abbey tower.
Main Street holds the shops and cafés, and the abbey grounds make a peaceful spot to rest. Eglinton Country Park, on the edge of town, has lakes, woodland and broad, level paths around the ruined Eglinton Castle, where the famous Eglinton Tournament was held in 1839. It is a popular place to rebuild walking.
Housing includes traditional sandstone homes near the centre and large estates built when Kilwinning became part of Irvine New Town, such as Pennyburn and Whitehirst Park. Many homes have standard staircases, and some flats have shared stairs.
NHS Ayrshire and Arran runs local health services, working with North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership. Kilwinning patients are usually treated at University Hospital Crosshouse near Kilmarnock. Our private home physiotherapy continues their recovery after discharge.
Kilwinning station is a junction with trains to Glasgow, Ayr and Largs. For many patients, the milestones are a walk along Main Street, a circuit of the lake at Eglinton or the train journey into Glasgow.
The abbey tower rebuilt in the nineteenth century is still used for the Papingo shoot, where archers aim straight up at a wooden bird hung from the top. Segton Avenue and the Dirrans area hold modern housing and shops, and the Garnock river walk runs north towards Dalry through quiet countryside. Dalgarven Mill, a restored water mill and museum of country life just beyond the town, has a tearoom and gentle paths, which makes it a motivating destination later in recovery.
