Lutterworth is a market town in south Leicestershire, set above the little River Swift close to the borders with Warwickshire and Northamptonshire. It sits just off the M1 near its junction with the M6.
John Wycliffe was rector of St Mary's Church in the fourteenth century, and he oversaw the first translation of the Bible into English while living here. The church, with its tall tower, still has medieval wall paintings.
Sir Frank Whittle developed some of the first jet engines nearby in the late 1930s, and a model of the Gloster jet aircraft stands on the roundabout south of town. Stanford Hall, a William and Mary country house, lies a few miles south-west.
Housing includes Georgian and timber-framed buildings around Market Street and Church Street, Victorian terraces, inter-war semis and large modern estates to the east. Bungalows are common in the quieter roads near Bitteswell.
NHS Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board commissions care. Patients are usually treated at Leicester Royal Infirmary or Leicester General Hospital, and Feilding Palmer Community Hospital is in the town. We continue rehabilitation privately at home.
Buses run to Leicester, Rugby and Market Harborough, and Rugby station is the nearest main-line stop. Typical aims include walking along Market Street, to St Mary's Church or along the River Swift footpaths.
The town centre is compact, with shops, cafés and benches close together, which suits short practice walks after surgery.
The path beside the River Swift below the church is quieter and grassy, so we try it once walking is steadier.
