Minster-on-Sea is the largest community on the Isle of Sheppey, off the north Kent coast. It grew around Minster Abbey, founded in the seventh century by St Sexburga, a Saxon queen. The abbey church still stands on the hill above the village, and its gatehouse houses a small museum with views across the island and the Thames estuary.
The Leas, a grassy clifftop area above the beach, has paths, benches and wide sea views, while the shingle beach below is reached by slopes and steps. The cliffs here are soft clay and have been eroding for centuries, revealing fossils that collectors hunt for along the shore. Barton’s Point Coastal Park, near Sheerness, has a lake and level paths.
Much of Minster is made up of bungalows and chalets, many built as holiday homes and later lived in year round, along with post-war estates and newer housing around Halfway and Thistle Hill. The island is linked to the mainland by the Sheppey Crossing and the older Kingsferry Bridge, and Sheerness station has trains to Sittingbourne.
Kent and Medway Integrated Care Board plans NHS care for Sheppey. Many residents are treated at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, with some services at Sheppey Community Hospital in Minster. Our private home physiotherapy continues on after discharge.
Goals often include walking on the Leas, getting to the Abbey for church or visiting the shops in Sheerness. Many patients live in bungalows, so steps up to the front door and getting in and out of the car are common issues.
