Physiotherapy Services in Normanton
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Normanton premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Normanton, in the Wakefield district, was once one of the busiest railway junctions in the north, where lines from Leeds, York, Sheffield and Manchester met. Its station refreshment room was famous among Victorian travellers, as express trains stopped there for meals before dining cars existed. Coal shaped the rest of the town, with collieries at Normanton, Altofts and Sharlston employing thousands until the 1980s.
Altofts was the birthplace of the Elizabethan seafarer Sir Martin Frobisher, and its colliery was later known for pioneering safety and welfare schemes for miners. Today the area is largely residential, with red-brick terraces near the centre, inter-war council estates and new private housing on old pit sites close to junction 31 of the M62.
Haw Hill Park, rising above the town centre, has paths with wide views across the Calder valley; the lower paths are gentle while the top is a real test. All Saints church, on the edge of the park, is the oldest building in Normanton. Trains from the much-reduced station still run towards Leeds and Sheffield, and buses link the town with Wakefield and Castleford.
West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board plans NHS services, and most residents go to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield for emergency and planned surgery. We work privately and independently, carrying on from the ward or community team rather than starting over.
Older patients are often ex-miners or their widows, with knees, hips and lungs that tell the story of hard physical work. Getting up the terrace stairs, walking to the High Street and managing the bus to Wakefield are the practical milestones we tend to plan around.
