North Tawton is a small town in West Devon, on the River Taw north of Dartmoor. It was once a busy wool town with mills along the river.
The Square, with its Victorian clock tower, is the heart of the town and holds a small cluster of shops. The streets around it are short, so a loop of the Square makes a sensible first walk outside.
Fore Street climbs gently away from the Square, lined with cob and stone houses. Walking it in stages, with a pause at each junction, is a good early challenge.
The River Taw curls around the edge of town, where the remains of the old woollen mill still stand. Field paths beside the river suit gentle walks on grass once you are steady.
The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital carries out most surgery for people here, with Okehampton community hospital a short drive away. After you are discharged, we continue the rehabilitation in your home.
Many homes are cob and stone cottages with thick walls, low doorways and steep, twisting stairs. Stair safety and bathroom access are usually top of the list on the first visit.
The rolling fields around the town look south to the northern edge of Dartmoor and Cosdon Hill. The Tarka Trail passes close by, giving keen walkers a well-signed route to aim for.
Sampford Courtenay gave its name to the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549, and Bondleigh sits by the Taw to the north. Bow, to the east on the A3072, has a primary school and a busy village shop.
Spreyton is known for the Tom Cobley Tavern and the song Widecombe Fair, while Clannaborough and Taw Green are tiny farming hamlets. Field gates and sloping yards there are woven into later sessions.

Specialist care for women through pregnancy, after birth and beyond.

Reducing the risk of falls and improving safe, confident movement at home and in the community.

Assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor to support bladder, bowel and core function.
