Physiotherapy Services in Okehampton
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Okehampton premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Okehampton is a market town in West Devon on the northern edge of Dartmoor, where the East and West Okement rivers meet. High Willhays and Yes Tor, the highest points in southern England, rise on the moor just to the south.
Okehampton Castle, the ruins of the largest castle in Devon, stands in a wooded valley beside the West Okement. In 2021 passenger trains returned to Okehampton station after nearly fifty years, linking the town directly with Exeter.
The Granite Way, a flat path along the old railway line, runs from Okehampton across the spectacular Meldon Viaduct to Lydford. Simmons Park, by the river, offers level paths and gardens, and the Museum of Dartmoor Life on West Street tells the story of moorland farming.
Housing includes old stone cottages, Victorian terraces, post-war estates and newer developments. Many residents live in villages and farms across the moorland edge, where steep lanes and uneven ground are common.
NHS Devon Integrated Care Board organises care. Most Okehampton patients are treated at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital or Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. We continue rehabilitation at home.
Goals include walking the Granite Way, catching the train to Exeter or walking on the moor again.
Okehampton Castle, the ruined Norman stronghold of the Courtenay family now cared for by English Heritage, sits in a wooded valley below the town. The Museum of Dartmoor Life on Fore Street tells the story of moorland farming and quarrying. Since the Dartmoor Line reopened in 2021, regular trains link the station with Exeter, which helps family visits. Simmons Park, with level paths beside the East Okement, is a gentle place to practise walking before tackling steeper moorland routes.
