Physiotherapy Services in Penicuik
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Penicuik premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Penicuik sits at the foot of the Pentland Hills in Midlothian, on the North Esk river. For two centuries it was a paper-making town, with the Cowan family’s Valleyfield mills producing paper for books and banknotes. Penicuik House, built by the Clerk family, was gutted by fire in 1899, but its estate is still open to walkers.
The town climbs from the river towards the hills, so many streets have gentle to steep slopes. Homes include older stone cottages and terraces near the centre, large post-war estates in Ladywood and Mauricewood and newer private housing on the edges. Stairs and front steps are common features.
Penicuik lost its railway in the 1950s, but the old line along the North Esk now forms a walking and cycling path towards Bonnyrigg, with level stretches through the wooded valley. Buses run frequently to Edinburgh. The Pentland Hills Regional Park, on the doorstep, offers walks for stronger patients.
NHS Lothian provides hospital care, with the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Midlothian Community Hospital in Bonnyrigg serving the area. Midlothian Health and Social Care Partnership arranges community services, and our private home visits fit alongside them.
Many patients are keen walkers who want to get back into the Pentlands after surgery. We start with stairs and slopes at home and build towards those hill paths.
Glencorse Reservoir, tucked into the Pentlands just north of the town, has a tarmac access road that gives a steady, gently rising walk with water and hill views, and Penicuik Town Hall and the Penicuik Centre, with its swimming pool, are focal points for local clubs that many older residents want to rejoin.
