Physiotherapy Services in Peterlee
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Peterlee premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Peterlee was designated a new town in 1948 to serve the colliery villages of east Durham, and it was named after Peter Lee, a miner, Methodist preacher and union leader who became chairman of Durham County Council. The new town was meant to give mining families better homes than the cramped colliery rows at Horden, Easington and Shotton.
The artist Victor Pasmore helped design the Sunny Blunts estate, and his concrete Apollo Pavilion, completed in 1969, spans a small lake there. Once neglected and controversial, it was restored and listed in 2011 and is now admired as a landmark of modern public art. Footpaths link the housing areas, with underpasses and slopes between them.
Castle Eden Dene, on the southern edge of town, is a national nature reserve in a deep wooded ravine running down to the sea, with ancient yews and steep, often muddy paths. The upper paths near the entrance are more manageable. The town centre is built around the covered Castle Dene shopping centre, and the coast at Horden and Crimdon is close by.
North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board plans NHS care, and Peterlee residents are usually treated at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, Sunderland Royal or North Durham, with some services at Peterlee Community Hospital. Our private home physiotherapy follows on after people are discharged.
Many patients are former miners or their families, living in post-war houses with one flight of stairs. Goals often include walking to the shopping centre, managing the bus or the train from Horden station, and getting back out into the dene.

Reducing the risk of falls and improving safe, confident movement at home and in the community.

Assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor to support bladder, bowel and core function.

Supporting people living with or recovering from cancer to rebuild strength and quality of life.
