Physiotherapy Services in Seaham
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Seaham premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Seaham, on the County Durham coast, was built around a harbour created in the 1820s by the Marquess of Londonderry to ship coal from his collieries. The town’s three pits, Seaham, Vane Tempest and Dawdon, employed thousands until the last closed in the early 1990s. Lord Byron married Annabella Milbanke at Seaham Hall in 1815.
Seaham’s beaches are famous for sea glass, the smooth coloured fragments left over from the Victorian bottle works that once dumped waste into the sea. Collectors come from far and wide. On the seafront, a steel sculpture of a First World War soldier, known locally as Tommy, has become a symbol of the town.
The coastline, once black with colliery waste, has been cleaned up and is now part of the Durham Heritage Coast, with a cliff-top path heading north and south. The seafront promenade is fairly level, but paths down to the beaches involve steep steps and ramps. Seaham station has trains to Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough.
North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board plans NHS services, and most Seaham residents go to Sunderland Royal Hospital for emergencies and surgery. We provide private home physiotherapy after discharge, building on any ward or community advice.
Many older residents are ex-miners or their families, living in colliery terraces or post-war council estates. Goals often include walking on the seafront, getting down to the beach for sea glass or managing the walk to the town centre shops.
