Princes Risborough is a small market town in Buckinghamshire, at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. Its name comes from the Black Prince, who once held the manor here, and the town centre has kept many old buildings.
The Market House, a seventeenth-century building on brick arches, stands in the middle of the town. The High Street and Church Street have independent shops, cafés and pubs, and the parish church of St Mary sits nearby.
The town centre is fairly level, which helps people building up their walking after surgery or a fall. A trip to the shops or a café is a common early goal that brings back a lot of independence.
Housing ranges from old cottages near the centre to post-war estates and newer homes on the edges of town. We often help people with stairs, bathroom access and getting up from low chairs and sofas.
Princes Risborough falls within NHS Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board. Residents are usually treated at Stoke Mandeville Hospital or Wycombe Hospital, and after discharge we can continue rehabilitation privately at home.
The station has trains to London Marylebone, Aylesbury and Oxford, and buses run to High Wycombe and Thame. Getting to the station or the bus stop is a practical goal for many people.
Whiteleaf Hill, with its chalk cross cut into the hillside, rises above Monks Risborough. Its paths are steep and are best saved for later, while Longwick and Askett have flatter lanes through the Vale of Aylesbury.
The Phoenix Trail, a level path along an old railway, runs from the town towards Thame and is ideal for building stamina once walking improves.
The National Trust's Princes Risborough Manor House stands near the church, and the Ridgeway long path crosses the hills just above the town. Locals often mention the Duke Street and Bell Street shops and the library, and short repeatable walks between these places help us track how much someone's stamina has improved from week to week.
