Physiotherapy Services in Risca
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Risca premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Risca lies in the lower Ebbw Valley, in Caerphilly county borough, a short drive north-west of Newport. It grew with coal mining and the Crumlin branch of the Monmouthshire Canal.
Twmbarlwm, the distinctive hill with an Iron Age fort and a Norman mound on its summit, rises above the town. Locals call the mound the Pimple, and reaching it is a proud aim for keen walkers.
The Crumlin arm of the canal survives in sections around Risca and Pontymister. Its towpath is flat, tree-lined and peaceful, which makes it one of the best local routes for recovery walks.
Much of the housing climbs the valley sides in terraces and estates, often with steep roads. Strong legs and confident balance on slopes are therefore central aims of most programmes here.
Patients from Risca are usually treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport or the Grange University Hospital near Cwmbran. Our physiotherapists can then pick up your care at home.
Pontymister, at the southern end, has shops, a retail park and some flatter streets. These give clients an easy option for short walks with a clear purpose, such as buying a newspaper.
Ty Sign is a large hillside estate built from the 1960s onwards above the town. Its long gradients are a real test, so we build up to them gradually over several weeks.
Crosskeys and Wattsville lie further up the valley where the Sirhowy and Ebbw meet. Many homes there are older terraces with steep stairs inside, which we practise in every session.
Cwmcarn Forest, just to the north, has a scenic drive, a lake and graded trails. The lakeside path is a favourite for clients who are ready to venture a little further from home.
Rogerstone, towards Newport, has the Fourteen Locks canal centre, where a flight of locks climbs the hillside. The towpath beside them gives a varied but manageable walk.

Assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor to support bladder, bowel and core function.

Supporting people living with or recovering from cancer to rebuild strength and quality of life.

Personalised, evidence-based nutrition and dietetic support delivered in the comfort of your home by an HCPC-registered dietitian.
