Physiotherapy Services in Shaw
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Shaw premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Shaw, part of the historic township of Shaw and Crompton, is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester, on the edge of the South Pennines. In the late nineteenth century it was one of the busiest cotton-spinning towns in the world, with dozens of mills; the Lilac mill and others still stand. The Crompton family, who gave their name to the area, built Crompton Hall.
The town centre around Market Street and the Shaw Market Place is compact. Dunwood Park, close to the centre, has paths, lawns and play areas, and the moors above High Crompton offer more challenging walks. The landscape is hilly, which can make even short trips tiring after illness.
Housing includes stone terraces, inter-war semis and post-war estates, with newer homes on former mill sites. Many residents are older people with long family ties to the town, and stairs and slopes are common challenges.
NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board plans local services. Shaw patients are usually treated at the Royal Oldham Hospital. Our private home physiotherapy continues their rehabilitation once they are home.
Shaw and Crompton Metrolink stop, on the line to Oldham, Rochdale and Manchester, gives easy access by tram. Patients often want to use the tram, walk to the shops or enjoy Dunwood Park.
The Shaw Wakes, once the town's summer holiday week when the mills closed, are still remembered fondly by older residents. Crompton Moor, above the town, has a network of paths, a lodge and wide views over Greater Manchester, while the Beal Valley offers lower, quieter walks. St James's Church on Church Road dominates the centre, and the library and the market stalls nearby are regular destinations for patients. Newhey's terraced streets and its tram stop at the far end of the line make a good goal for those living further up the valley.
