Physiotherapy Services in Southwark
Southwark is an inner south London borough that begins on the Thames opposite the City, at Bankside, Borough and London Bridge, and runs south through Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Walworth and Elephant and Castle to Camberwell, Peckham, Nunhead, East Dulwich and Dulwich. This page covers the borough as a whole. Homes just to the west, around Kennington, Brixton and Vauxhall, are often in Lambeth, while Deptford and New Cross to the east are in Lewisham, so please check your postcode rather than relying on the nearest station name.
We do not operate a clinic in Southwark; our physiotherapy appointments are provided in patients' homes. The physiotherapist who visits may live some distance away and travel to you. Whether a visit is possible depends on your exact postcode and on who is available at the time, so please use the postcode checker on this page rather than relying on the name of your street or neighbourhood.
Guy's Hospital near London Bridge is in the borough and is run by Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. King's College Hospital, run by King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, stands on the Lambeth side of Denmark Hill, right on the boundary with Southwark. Many Southwark residents will have been cared for at one of them, though people are also discharged from hospitals elsewhere. Home Physio And Rehab is an independent service and is not part of either hospital or of the NHS. Keep your discharge letter and any exercise sheets for the first visit, so your physiotherapist knows what the hospital team advised.
Southwark has a wide mix of homes. Many people live on large estates around Walworth, Bermondsey and Peckham, where the route home can include deck access walkways, long corridors and lifts that are not always working. Others live in Victorian terraces in Camberwell, Nunhead and East Dulwich, or in converted warehouse flats near the river in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. Your physiotherapist will look at the way you actually get in and out of your home and make that part of the plan from the start.
For many people, the goal is getting back to everyday local journeys: the walk to Rye Lane or East Street Market, a bus from Elephant and Castle, a slow lap of Burgess Park, Peckham Rye or Dulwich Park, or a riverside walk near Southwark Park. Your physiotherapist will agree goals with you, practise them where it is safe, and keep adjusting the plan as you improve.
