Physiotherapy Services in St Albans
St Albans is a cathedral city in Hertfordshire, a little over twenty miles north of central London, governed by St Albans City and District Council. Home Physio And Rehab has no clinic or premises in the city. Appointments take place in your own home, and the physiotherapist who comes to you may travel in from elsewhere. Whether we can arrange visits depends on your exact postcode and on who is free at the time, so the postcode checker on this page gives a more reliable answer than the city name.
Homes in St Albans vary a great deal from one street to the next. Close to the cathedral, along Fishpool Street and around St Peter's Street, there are older cottages and townhouses, some with steep, narrow staircases and a front door that opens straight onto the pavement. Fleetville and the roads off Hatfield Road are lined with Edwardian and inter-war terraces, while Marshalswick and Jersey Farm, to the north-east, have more post-war semis and bungalows. These are only examples, and a name on a map does not tell us who can visit; your own postcode does.
Many people in and around the city come home after planned orthopaedic surgery. St Albans City Hospital is the elective care centre for West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, while emergency and trauma patients from the area are usually treated at Watford General Hospital, so recovery may follow either a planned hip or knee operation or an unplanned admission. Others will have been treated in London or somewhere else entirely. Home Physio And Rehab is independent and is not part of the NHS or of any of these hospitals. Please keep your discharge letter, your surgeon's precautions and any exercise sheets for the first visit, and your physiotherapist will start from that advice rather than replacing it.
The first appointment is mostly about seeing how you actually manage. That might mean watching you climb the stairs in a tall Victorian house, practising how to get in and out of a low car parked on a sloping street, or working out a safer way into a bath that has no shower over it. From there we agree a few goals and a short set of exercises to practise between sessions, written down so that a partner or relative can help if you would like them to.
As your strength returns, the goals usually move outdoors. In St Albans that could be walking down to the Saturday market on St Peter's Street, managing the slope between the city centre and the lake in Verulamium Park, or reaching a bus stop on London Road. We only build towards these when it is safe, and we will tell you honestly if something needs more time.
If you live in the western side of Hertfordshire, the Watford and Hemel Hempstead pages describe those towns in their own right, and the East of England page explains how this part of the region fits together. Wherever you are, the checker uses your postcode rather than the page you happen to be reading.
