Stansted Mountfitchet is a large village in Uttlesford, north-west Essex, close to Bishop's Stortford and the airport that shares its name. The village has a strong sense of community, with shops along Lower Street and Chapel Hill.
Mountfitchet Castle is a reconstruction of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, built on the site of the original, and is popular with families. The tower windmill, one of the best preserved in Essex, opens to visitors on certain days.
The village is quite hilly, with steep roads such as Chapel Hill linking the upper and lower parts. Those slopes can be a real challenge after a hip or knee replacement, so we often start with flatter routes and build up gradually.
Homes include old timber-framed cottages, Victorian terraces and newer estates on the edges of the village. We help people with narrow stairs, uneven floors and getting in and out of the bath or shower.
Stansted Mountfitchet falls within NHS Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board. Residents are usually treated at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, and once they come home we can continue rehabilitation privately.
The station on the West Anglia line has trains to Cambridge and London, while buses run to Bishop's Stortford and Saffron Walden. Getting to the station or bus stop is a common goal for people recovering after surgery.
Elsenham, Manuden and Ugley are surrounded by farmland, with homes on quiet lanes. In these villages we prepare people for uneven ground, gates and roads without pavements.
Footpaths around the village lead through fields and woods, and once balance and strength improve, these can become a rewarding part of recovery.
Residents often mention Bentfield Green, the Recreation Ground off Lower Street and the Hargrave Park playing fields as places they would like to reach again. Stansted Brook winds through the lower village, and the footbridges over it are quiet spots where someone using a walking stick can pause, lean on the rail and watch the water before heading home.
